REFERENCE GROUP IDENTIFICATION AND THE PERCEPTION OF POLITICAL FIGURES: I. THE EFFECTS OF NOMINATING CONVENTIONS.

Abstract

The document is concerned with research on the operations of balance and congruity principles in perception of persons and objects. A scale was devised to measure perception of political candidates. The measuring instrument was a semantic differential, similar to the ASO scale developed by Fiedler. The subjects rated eight political figures and the concept 'ideal president' on three separate occasions; before the Democratic convention, between the Democratic and the Republican conventions, and after the Republican convention. The dependent variable was a deviation, or 'D' score between the individual's evaluation of a particular candidate and his evaluation of 'ideal president.' (Author)
