POLYCHLOROPRENE STRUCTURE STUDY. II. A QUANTITATIVE INFRARED SPECTROSCOPIC METHOD FOR POLYCHLOROPRENE MICROSTRUCTURE INVESTIGATION,

Abstract

A quantitative ir spectroscopic determination was developed using low-mol.-wt. compds. (cis-4-chloro-4-octene, cis-5-chloro-5 decene, trans-4-chloro-4-octene, and 2-chloro-1-hexens) as model polychloroprene (I) units representing various modes of monomer unit addn. The concn. of representing various modes of monomer unit addn. The concn. of 1,4-cis, 1,4-trans, and 3,4-addn. modes was determined using corresponding 1653, 1662, and 1636/cm max., respectively. The 1,2-addn. units were determined by the difference. The rubbers Nairit, Nairit KR, Nairit P, and Neoprene W prepd. with different regulators had 0.5% 1,4-cis; 12% 1,4-trans; 87% 3,4 and 0.5% 1,2 addn. units. Apparently the structure of the I chain prepd. by a free-radical mechanism is independent of the nature of the polymn. regulator.
