AUTOMATED NON-MATERIAL TARGET SYSTEM.

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to determine the feasibility of a non-material target and scoring system for training in the use of weapons. Material targets presently used in target ranges have the disadvantage of short life under heavy fire, requiring that ranges be shut down for target replacement. A non-material target was obtained by directing a beam of light at a water fountain. Light scattered from the water surface provided a distinct six-inch diameter target at 100 yards. Since a non-material target cannot indicate hits, a scoring system was devised which automatically determines the target intercept of a bullet in flight. The bullet path is automatically located by triangulation, determined by two angles relative to a fixed base line. Angular fixes are obtained by reflecting ultraviolet energy, (253.7 millimicrons), from the bullet and optically measuring the angle from the bullet to two sensing stations. The actual measurement is made by detecting the image of the bullet path as it passes a coding strip. (Author)
