RADIO FREQUENCY STUDY OF ATOMIC STRUCTURE AND SPECTRA.

Abstract

We have investigated the possibility of using radio-frequency techniques for the study of the spectra and structure of free atomic ions. After consideration of various methods of producing polarized ions and detecting their polarization we concluded that a potentially useful method of producing polarized ions would be the ionization of polarized atoms or by charge exchange collisions of ions with polarized atoms. A possible method of detecting the polarization of polarized ions may be by the use of charge changing collisions between polarized ions and a target of polarized atoms. We have developed and tested a high intensity ion source that is capable of producing polarized ions of Li and Cs. The technical details of this source and its capabilities are described in this report. A target of polarized Cs atoms has been constructed but it has not been adequately tested. Some possible experiments using the polarized ion source and polarized target are discussed in this paper. In addition some experiments on charge exchange collisions between unpolarized ions and unpolarized atoms have been carried out in order to determine various cross sections needed for our work on the detection of radio frequency spectroscopy.
