TRAUMATIC WOUNDING, BURNS, AND RELATED PROBLEMS OF INFECTION.

Abstract

Both clinical and laboratory studies were conducted and enabled the identification and quantitation of a number of important phenomena which attend thermal trauma. The studies also defined and characterized the burned surface in terms of basic pathophysiologic function. Rational techniques of burn dressing were devised that appear to be associated with considerable saving of endogenous caloric expenditure; morbidity and mortality. In addition, it appears probable that, through the understanding of the structure of the burn wound gained, to date, in these studies, and under current investigation; an expedient, safe, topical material may be identified which will contribute to significantly increased survival, and decreased fluid and caloric requirements for the patient.
