HYSTERESIS LOOPS OF IRON-GADOLINIUM FILMS, PLOTTED BY THE STATIC METHOD,

Abstract

The measurements were made with a magnetometer with transverse field, and the samples were annealed and non-annealed films with different compositions, ranging from 100% to 52% of iron. The films were evaporated from tungsten vessels in vacuum on glass substrates heated to 150C in a magnetic field of 50 Oe. The rate of film deposition was 500 A/min. The results revealed that such films exhibit all four types of hysteresis loops that were previously observed by K. A. Kuroyedov in permalloy films. The variations in the crystal-structure defects and in the coercive force occurring on going from each type of hysteresis loop to the other, and the dependence of these loops on the annealing temperature, are traced in detail. It is shown that the most useful films from the point of view of practical applications are those containing 20-33% Gd, since their coercive force is more uniform from sample to sample, the hysteresis loops are closest to the rectangular, and their magnetization is comparable with that of permalloy films.
