MUTUAL DIFFUSION OF NIOBIUM AND METALS OF THE IVa, Va, VIa GROUPS,

Abstract

The mutual diffusion between niobium and metals of groups IVa, Va, and VIa was investigated. Specimens of vacuum-melted 99.9% pure titanium, zirconium, vanadium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten were ground, polished, clamped with similarly treated niobium specimens, and annealed in a vacuum at 1300C for 100 hr. Metals having a lower melting temperature than niobium exhibited a higher diffusion mobility than the latter and a more intensive penetration into Nb while Nb diffused in these metals only slightly.
