APPLICATION OF POTENTIAL THEORY METHODS TO THE STUDY OF STRESS CONCENTRATION NEAR HOLES IN SHELLS,

Abstract

Considerable progress has been made on the problem of stress concentration near holes and indentations in plates and shells as a result of the research of Soviet and foreign investigators. Disturbances caused by individual openings, the attenuation phenomenon, disturbances on passage from the hole, and the interaction of holes among themselves were particularly studied in detail. Moreover, plates and spherical shells were quite thoroughly investigated, and somewhat less study was devoted to other aspects of shells of positive and negative curvature. An explanation of peculiarities of shells of negative gauss curvature and the establishment of dependences between the form of the average surface and the distribution of stresses at various load aspects should obviously be considered one of the problems next in turn to be considered. The essential results can be attained from the direction indicated by the setting up of general effective algorithms for the solution of a wide range of problems, which would make it possible to fully utilize the possibilities of modern computing techniques for computing a large number of variants of solutions as well as for the systemization and generalization of the information obtained.
