THE OPTIMUM SHAPE OF NONCOHERENT RADAR PULSE SIGNALS,

Abstract

The report presents a method for deriving the optimum shape of radar pulses which minimizes the deviations in the estimate of target distance and velocity. It is assumed that the S/N is sufficiently high and that the radar system operates in a narrow band of frequencies processing the information by the maximum likelihood method. Families of curves calculated on a digital computer supply information on the optimum pulse shapes for best target distance estimates and target velocity estimates. The pulses are symmetric for both cases, but their shapes differ. Curves showing the advantage of these pulses over rectangular pulses are also presented.
