BAROCLINIC, ALFVEN AND ROSSBY WAVES IN GEOSTROPIC FLOW,

Abstract

Further results are given concerning geostrophic baroclinic flow in a zonal magnetic field. In particular, the following are given: (1) a necessary condition for instability that is analogous to one for stratified shear flow found by Howard and Miles; (2) bounds on the phase velocities of all neutral oscillations; (3) explicit solutions for these neutral modes in certain cases; and (4) solution to the Eady problem (baroclinic flow with constant shear) in a zonal magnetic field without and with the beta effect.
