AFML ELECTRICAL PLATE SLAP FACILITY.

Abstract

A facility to produce one-dimensional impacts was constructed. The high pressures developed by an exploding foil are used to launch relatively thin flat plates. The energy to explode the foil is provided by a fast discharge 100 kilovolt capacitor bank. Two types of exploding foil assemblies were developed to launch primarily 3.81 cm x 3.81 cm x 0.127 mm Mylar plates at velocities of from 0.1 to 3.5 km/sec. Ultrahigh speed framing camera photographs are taken of every test to determine the planarity and velocity of the launched plate. Other streak or framing cameras are available so that a variety of optical measurements can be made for each test. (Author)
