BASIC RESEARCH ON THE SEPARATION OF SCANDIUM YTTRIUM, AND THE RARE EARTHS BY SOLVENT EXTRACTION.

Abstract

The solvent extraction behavior of scandium, yttrium, and a number of rare earth metals was investigated. Pure 2,2,6 tetramethyl 3,5 heptanedione, hereafter referred to as H(thd), was used as the chelating agent and the organic solvent. In addition, the closely related reagent, 1,1,1-trifluoro-5 5-dimethyl 2,4-hexanedione, hereafter referred to as K(fdhd), was studied as a reagent for separating europium and terbium by countercurrent distribution extractions. Atomic absorption as a method of analysis for the rare earths was also investigated. (Author)
