VERTICAL STRUCTURE OF WATER AND GENERAL FEATURES OF WATER CIRCULATION IN THE BLACK SEA (Vertikalnoe Stoenie Vodnoi Tolshchi i Obshchie Cherty Tsirkulyatsii Vod Chernogo Morya),

Abstract

The basic regularities of spatial distribution of temperature and salinity of the trophic layer are determined by hydrometeorological factors and by dynamic causes. The distribution of these elements in the deep and bottom water is induced mainly by dynamic causes. The Black Sea is characterized by deep mixing, involving the entire water column from surface to bottom. The intensity of the vertical mixing is determined by the intensity and character of atmospheric circulation over the sea, by the frequency of convergence-divergence phenomena, by internal waves, and by the amount of inflowing Sea of Marmara water and continental runoff. The status of the biogenic and food base for fishes of the trophic layer depends not only upon the amount of the continental runoff, but also upon the intensity of vertical mixing, which takes place throughout the sea. It is realized that surface water is enriched with biogenic elements brought into the trophic layer from depths in counterclockwise current systems, by upwelling taking place on the continental shelf, and by the introduction of biogenic elements into the coastal vertical circulation, owing to internal wave and convergence-divergence phenomena.
