THE EFFECT OF CONTINENTAL RUNOFF ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF PHYTOPLANKTON IN THE NORTHWESTERN PART OF THE BLACK SEA (Vliyanie Vod Materikovogo Stoka na Razvitie Fitoplanktona v Severo-Zapadnoi Chasti Chernogo Morya),
Abstract
Two areas with various conditions for phytoplankton development can be singled out in the NW Black Sea: with salinity below 17%, and with salinity above 17%. The biomass of the former exceeds several times that of the latter. In the brackish water the algae are better supplied with biogenic elements where the 'cyclic' type of development is clearly pronounced. The presence of two areas with diverse salinity conditions facilitates the formation of two algal groups: brackish and marine algae.
