SEASONAL DEVELOPMENT AND DISTRIBUTION OF ZOOPLANKTON IN THE NW BLACK SEA (Sezonnoe Razvitie i Raspredelenie Zooplanktona v Severo-Zapadnoi Chasti Chernogo Morya),

Abstract

The quantitative development and qualitative composition of zooplankton in the NW part of the sea are subjected to considerable seasonal and yearly fluctuations. In Spring (April-June) the zooplankton is represented by cryophilic and eurythermal groups whose relationship varies from April to June so that the biomass of eurythermal species increases. The total biomass of zooplankton and the biomass of individual species depend upon the character of the spring (early and warm or late and cold spring). In summer the thermophilic species prevail, and their biomass is considerably greater than in the Spring. The distribution of zooplankton over the NW part of the Black Sea in spring and summer has a clearly pronounced pattern. (Author)
