DYNAMICS OF ZOOPLANKTON IN THE SE PART OF THE BLACK SEA (Dinamika Zooplanktona Yugo-Vostochnoi Chasti Chernogo Morya),

Abstract

The major zooplankton forms which constitute food resources for the winter are Calanus helgolandicus, Pseudocalanus elongatus, Sagitta euxina. In July one can observe considerable quantities of Acartia clausi, Oithona nana, Paracalanus parvus, which constitute the bulk of food resources for fishes. In August, in addition to the above-mentioned organisms, one can observe the thermophilic forms, mainly Penilia avirostris. In winter-spring the development of zooplankton in the SE part of the Black Sea depends mainly upon the temperature and wind regions. The SE part of the Black Sea is characterized by mass development of zooplankton species that are not consumed by fishes, mainly Noctiluca miliaris, whose biomass may exceed the biomass of the edible zooplankton 4 to 10 times during the period of outbursts.
