BRILLOUIN SCATTERING IN PURE AND MIXED CUBIC CRYSTALS.

Abstract

The room temperature Brillouin spectrum of RbI, KBr, KCl, and KBr:KCl cubic crystals has been investigated by measurements on the fine structure satellites of Helium-Neon laser light of 6328 A scattered by these crystals. Spectroscopic measurements with a pressure scanned Fabry-Perot interferometer and a photomultiplier were made of the light scattered by the transverse, longitudinal, and mixed modes of sound waves propagating in the (100) plane. From the shifts in the frequency of the incident light, values of the velocity of sound and the elastic constants c11, c12, and c44 were determined for each crystal. The results are in good agreement with those obtained by classical acoustic techniques. (Author)
