THE POSSIBILITY OF FORECASTING STORMS, BASED ON UNDERWATER WAVE PRESSURE,
Abstract
An investigation is presented of a method and equipment for the possible forecasting of storms, based on the measurement of changes in underwater pressure caused by forerunners. Underwater pressure is measured with an inductive transducer either planted on the bottom near shore or suspended from a damped wave pole. The sensor unit is comprised of two chambers, Q and M, with the former acting as the instrumentation casing and the latter consisting of a rubber cylinder contained within a perforated housing. The sensor unit has 2 measurement scales controlled from the shipboard console. The rough scale is used for recording wind-driven waves; the sensitive scale records low waves. The records obtained are compared with simultaneously taken film records. Some aspects of the nearshore implantation methods are briefly mentioned. The technique of interpreting long-wave recordings is discussed and some conclusions regarding the effectiveness of the method are drawn. (Author)
