STUDIES OF THE TOUGHNESS OF POLYCARBONATE OF BISPHENOL A IN LIGHT OF ITS SECONDARY TRANSITION.

Abstract

Results from different techniques on amorphous polybisphenol-A carbonate(NMR, dielectric, mechanical) in the temperature range -150 C to room temperature were reviewed. Shear creep and stress relaxation measurements were able to resolve into two components of the broad relaxation process (gamma transition), the high symmetry of which was previously apparent from the results of torsion pendulum experiments. One of the two processes is attributed to relaxation of carbonate groups; the other seems to originate from some restricted motions of the phenol group. An attempt to correlate the high impact strength of polybisphenol-A carbonate and the observed molecular movements was made. (Author-PL)
