ESTIMATION OF GYRO PARAMETERS FROM WHEEL RUNDOWN DATA.

Abstract

The report describes a technique for estimating certain gyro parameters from data taken during tests where the power is removed from a gyro wheel being driven at constant speed, and the wheel is allowed to coast to a stop. The test data is in the form of wheel angular position or wheel speed as a function of time from removal of wheel power. This data is input to a digital computer program along with certain known constants such as gyro wheel inertia. The program computes, by means of nonlinear iterative least squares estimation: (1) the initial wheel speed and (2) the coulomb friction, linear and nonlinear viscous damping torque coefficients associated with the gyro wheel. The model presumes that the friction and damping torques are the principal ones acting on the wheel during the rundown process, a presumption which is borne out by the results obtained using the program.
