INVESTIGATION OF PLATES AND SHELLS UNDER EXTERNAL LOADING AND ELEVATED TEMPERATURES.
Abstract
The studies briefly described in this report stem from continuing investigations of plates and shells under external loading and elevated temperatures, and include problems of special interest to designers of missiles and aircraft. Chapter I discusses the analysis of the postbuckling (large-deflection theory) of noncircular (oval) cylindrical shells under axial compression and related experimental investigations, the effects of boundary conditions and the application of exact finite deformation theory of three-dimensional elasticity to the stability problem of thick-walled cylinders. Chapter II describes investigations of nonlinear membrane shell problems and stress concentration problems for spherical shells. Chapter III refers to work concerned with effects of concentrated loads applied to reinforcing frames of circular cylindrical shells. Chapter IV discusses investigations of the effects of creep in plate and shell structures, and also describes work on the dynamics of a beam of changing cross section. (Author)
