STUDIES OF PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGICAL BASELINES.
Abstract
In order to explore the use of psychophysiological baselines as indices of alertness or stress, changes in autonomic variables under different conditions of activity were investigated. Three experiments were carried out in which subjects were studied during rest, monitoring, and mental arithmetic. Continuous recordings were made of respiratory rate, heart rate, finger volume, pulse volume, skin temperature, and skin resistance. Means, standard deviations, ranges, and mean square successive differences were calculated for each period of the experiment. Significant differences in the baseline of these variables were found between work and rest periods. Changes were in the direction of increased autonomic activation during work. (Author)
