CLIMATIC ATLAS OF NORTH AMERICA MEAN WINDS,

Abstract

The purpose of this Technical Paper is to provide a climatic reference on mean winds from ten to seventy thousand feet for briefings, flying safety seminars, and forecast study applications. The mean wind charts presented in this study were developed from vector mean winds on a five degree latitude/longitude grid. The source of data was Northern Hemisphere Vector Mean Winds prepared by Climatology Division, 3d Weather Wing in 1964. Charts are presented for each month and for levels at ten thousand foot intervals from ten to seventy thousand feet. Solid lines represent vector mean wind direction with arrows pointing in the direction of the flow. Dashed lines show the vector mean wind speed in knots. (Author)
