COMPARISON OF TITRANTS FOR FLUORIDE USING FLUORIDE ION ELECTRODE.

Abstract

Using the commercially available fluoride ion electrode, a study was undertaken to evaluate as many as possible of the many titrants which have been suggested and/or used for the volumetric determination of fluoride ion. While it is stated that this electrode responds only to fluoride ion activity and to hydroxyl ion, the polyvalent nature of most titrants for fluoride leads to the simultaneous formation of more than one possible complex, which in turn makes the optimum conditions for use of the fluoride ion electrode somewhat obscure. The effects on the shape of the experimentally observed potentiometric curves obtained by variation of the two main parameters (titrant species and concentration of electrolytes other than fluoride ion) are presented.
