NUMERICAL INTEGRATION OF EQUATIONS OF MOTION OF A VISCOUS FLUID.

Abstract

Two problems of time-dependent viscous flow are studied by direct numerical methods. The first is the development of flow in a semi-infinite straight channel, closed at one end by a piston, when the piston is set in motion with a finite acceleration. The second problem is that of development of flow in a cylinder filled with liquid when the cylinder is set in motion by an impulsive rotation about its axis. Both flows are studied in detail, with particular reference to development and the factors which govern it. In both problems some special cases can be isolated and treated by alternative methods. This provides a check on the accuracy of the numerical solutions. (Author)
