PLASTIC DEFORMATION IN POLYCRYSTALLINE ALUMINA.

Abstract

The various modes of plastic deformation possible in polycrystalline alumina - basal and non-basal slip, basal and rhombohedral deformation twinning, diffusional 'creep', and grain boundary sliding - are discussed. Recent experiments concerned with hot working of polycrystalline alumina (at temperature of approximately 1750 - 1950C) and the brittle-ductile transition in fine-grained alumina (at approximately 1200C) are interpreted with emphasis on the deformation mechanisms.
