NIGHT AIRGLOW OI GREEN, CONTINUUM, AND HYDROXYL EMISSIONS,

Abstract

Three rocketborne measurements of night airglow emissions are reported. Maximum OI-green emission of 14 R/km was observed at 102 km. Maximum continuum emission of 0.04/RA/km was observed at 91 km, and maximum OH (8,3) emission of 44 R/km was observed at 97 km. Simultaneous measurement of high-energy electron flux and OI-green emission showed that no significant amount of excitation resulted from high-energy electron bombardment. These emission measurements, together with similar measurements reported by other investigators, were analyzed to determine the excitation mechanisms responsible for the emissions. (Author)
