A SURVEY OF HEAT TRANSFER PROBLEMS CONNECTED WITH SPACE VEHICLE REENTRY,

Abstract

After a discussion of the modes of heat transfer to a reentering space vehicle, the present state of knowledge concerning convective heat transfer under hypersonic conditions is reviewed. The two-dimensional and axisymmetric cases are discussed first. The three-dimensional flow under 'cold-wall' conditions is considered next. Finally, the boundary layer phenomena connected with ablation and mass transfer are considered. (Author)
