A DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE ERRORS OF ATMOSPHERIC SOUND RANGING,

Abstract

This report is based on a probabilistic model for single-array sound ranging in a nonhomogeneous atmosphere. The magnitude of the radial acoustic source location error as a function of various error sources and array dimension is shown. From the set of error contour curves given for the six-microphone line array in dimensionless format, it is shown that the radial acoustic source location error at any given point in the ground plane can be estimated for any size array. All phases are illustrated with the results of sample calculations. (Author)
