THE MEASUREMENT OF TRANSIENT DISPLACEMENTS ALONG THE SIDE OF A METALLIC CYLINDRICAL ROD DURING THE PASSAGE OF A PLASTIC WAVE.

Abstract

The radial displacement provided by a constant velocity impact applied to one end of a cylindrical rod is studied by means of a streak interferometric technique. The resulting continuous spatial and temporal display of data has distinct advantages over that of other transducers which give their output parameters as a function of time at discrete points on the specimen. The sensitivity and detail of data collected with this technique over an extended portion of the specimen are considered necessary for the study of the constitutive relationships of solids at or near their yield point. Representative interferograms are shown and displacement data are reduced from them for direct comparison with predictions based on static stress-strain curves. A method is outlined which shows how the interferometric results might be used to establish the constitutive relationship of the material with minimal initial assumptions. (Author)
