Abstract
The book is concerned with the application of information theory to the design of new systems for collecting, transmitting, and transforming information. It may also be of use in evaluating existing systems. The material is presented systematically in a format easily accessible for beginners. Included are many design methods, theoretical generalizations, and results which are of interest to information theory specialists. General statements on information theory are supplemented by a number of new concepts applicable to practical problems. Methods of coordinating terminal equipment to communication channels are described. Problems of speed of information transfer over binary communication channels carrying regular and fluctuating signals are discussed. A new criterion of information detection that establishes a link between Kotel'milov's criterion and the basic relationships of information theory is introduced. It is shown that matched filters may be considered optimal in information transmission applications. Structural problems of certain matched filters are discussed.
