ON LINEAR VISCOELASTIC RODS
Abstract
The paper is based on the general thermodynamical theory of a Cosserat continuum developed by Green and Laws. Specific constitutive equations are given for a linear viscoelastic material. When the form of the free energy is restricted by certain symmetry conditions, the basic equations separate into four groups, two for flexure, one for torsion, and one for extension of the rod. Thermal effects occur only in the last group. Flexural and torsional wave propagation along an infinite rod are considered.
