MACHINING THERMAL-RESISTANT MATERIALS.

Abstract

An investigation was made in areas of potential improvement when milling thermal-resistant alloys. Areas such as tool materials, cutting fluids, cutter body materials and tool geometries were studied and are reported in chart and graphic form. Tool life was increased up to 150% when using new high-speed steel (H.S.S.) tool materials, and certain cutting fluids, over conventional standard tool materials. The high density sintered powdered metal, Fansteel 77 showed up to 100% better tool life than SAE 4130 steel when machining H-11, a hot work die steel. (Author)
