WAVE GROUPS IN THE FLEXURAL MOTIONS OF BEAMS SUBJECTED TO AXIAL TENSION,

Abstract

The modified Timoshenko equations were used to investigate the wavelength distribution of the bending moment and shear force responses, in an infinite beam, to both a concentrated transverse force impulse and a concentrated moment impulse. Solutions resulting from the aforementioned disturbances were obtained for a simply supported finite beam; then the beam was allowed to become infinitely long. In the limit, the solutions assumed integral forms, which were converted to continuous spectra of wave trains. From the solutions obtained in the foregoing manner, the number and nature of the moment and shear force discontinuities propagating from the disturbances were studied.
