STEEPEST DESCENT TRAJECTORY OPTIMIZATION WITH INEQUALITY CONSTRAINTS,

Abstract

A theoretical motivation for steepest descent solution of problems of minima and maxima of functions and functionals is presented. A method of solution of a simple variational problem, of the type encountered in trajectory optimization, is outlined. The general optimization problem, including equality and inequality constraints, both instantaneous and terminal, is defined. A general method for handling inequality constraints is developed, and a method of solving the general constrained problem is derived. The method permits the solution of realistically constrained trajectory optimization problems. (Author)
