ROLE OF ARMED FORCES IN NATION-BUILDING PROGRAMS: AGRICULTURE, THE ISRAELI NAHAL PROGRAM,

Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to study one example of the use of armed forces to provide agricultural training in the form of equivalent national service as part of a nation-building program. Specifically the Israel Defence Forces program of specialized agricultural training for certain volunteer youth groups as part of compulsory military service is studied in some detail. This program is known as NAHAL, the Hebrew acronym for Fighting Pioneering Youth (Noar Halutz Lochaim). A subsidiary aim is to provide insight into similar programs of other nations based on the Israeli experience. (Author)
