BASIC RESEARCH ON AURORA AND AIRGLOW.

Abstract

The instruments currently in use for the spectroscopic and photometric observation of aurora and airglow are listed together with modifications and new developments of instrumentation. Extensive modification to a balloon-borne spectrometer are described and some of the uses of high altitude research balloons are given. The possibility of OH twilight enhancements have also been studied but so far with negative results. Considerable theoretical investigation has been carried out on the photochemistry of oxygen and hydrogen to accompany the measurements of the OH and O2(Singlet Delta sub g) emmissions. The results of more than one year's data on twilight alkali metals are presented. (Author)
