REFRACTOMETER INSTABILITIES RELATED TO TRANSIENTS OF TEMPERATURE,

Abstract

Calibration of the dual-cavity refractometer has been carried out in dry air at constant temperature and varied pressure, with the aid of an evacuated bell jar in an environmental wind tunnel. As temperature changed from 30 to -21C, the calibration curves shifted in the direction of increasing pulse length, representing a refractivity shift of 20 N-units. A new test environment has been constructed in the form of a vertical wind tunnel with a rotating arm to carry the refractometer through the jet at controlled rate. Study of the capacitor refractometer with this tunnel showed that its effective thermal lag is about that of the sensing capacitor when operated in the switching mode and with axial ventilation. Similar observations on the dual vacity refractometer indicated that the microwave cavities control its thermal lag. During the next period, the construction of the capacitor refractometer will be revised, and study of the thermal response of the dual-cavity refractometer will be continued for suggested instrument modification.
