ION RADICALS OF ORGANIC SULFUR, SELENIUM TELLURIUM AND PHOSPHORUS COMPOUNDS.
Abstract
This report summaries research on the chemistry of isolated, crystalline salts of the thianthrene cation radical. Two salts have been isolated: Th(+.)I2Cl3(-) and Th(+.)ClO4(-). Their electron-transfer, polymerization-initiation, and atom-transfer properties have been investigated, as well as their hydrolysis. The oxidation of aryl sulfides, sulfoxides and sulfones with persulfuric acid has been studied. Cation radicals are formed from the sulfur compounds only after hydroxylation of the ring(s) has occurred. Studies of charge-transfer complex formation and charge-transfer spectroscopy in the systems thianthrene: IBr, thianthrene: TCNE, and phenyl sulfide: IBr are under way. In a new research venture the formation of anion radicals of Group IIIA organometallic compounds are being studied. The objectives are to characterize the anion radicals of triaryl metals, Ar3M where M is in Group IIIA.
