NEW METHOD FOR DETERMINING RUBY LASER GENERATION LOSSES,

Abstract

A new method is proposed for simultaneously determining the gain and loss factor of an active laser medium (ruby) at the actual generating modes of the laser. The method is based theoretically on the energy balance established between the laser gain and the laser losses at any particular lasing mode, and its experimental realization involves the use of a dispersive cavity and continuous variation of the laser frequency, such as to ensure operation within the width of the luminescence line. In the case of the ruby R1 line, the loss factors determined by this method are 0.027 and 0.006 cm(-1) for polished and roughened rod surfaces, respectively, and agree with data obtained by other methods. The theory of the method is developed in detail and it is shown that the method can be used to investigate the losses. (Author)
