MICROSTRUCTURES OF ZIRCONIUM-BASED TERNARY CARBIDE ALLOYS.

Abstract

The microstructures of the zirconium carbide-graphite alloys were characterized, and the effect of ternary additions on the microstructure of a high-carbon base alloy was studied. Alloying additions to a 34 atomic percent zirconium, 66 atomic percent carbon alloy included boron, chromium, magnesium and silicon, and tantalum. Of the ternary additions, tantalum displayed the most profound effect by the complete alteration of the microstructure. Other additions caused only minimal changes in the microstructure. (Author)
