OPTICAL EFFECTS IN UNDERWATER EXPLOSIONS OF SPHERICAL SYMMETRY.
Abstract
High speed photographic techniques are employed in the study of underwater explosions. After detonation the gas bubble is surrounded by an expanding shell of shocked water. The object of this present work is to estimate the magnification effects of such a shell upon the apparent bubble size, and to assess further optical effects arising from the air/water interface located between the charge and the observer. As most experiments are conducted using spherical charges, bubbles and shock waves of this symmetry only are considered. Three methods of approach to the problem are discussed. (Author)
