COLD DRAWING IN CRYSTALLINE POLYMERS
Abstract
In this investigation of the plastic yield (or cold-drawing) phenomenon in crystalline polymers, most of the work was carried out on Nylon 6, although polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were also studied. Absorption of plasticizers (water, alcohols, phenol) in Nylon 6 produced changes in the crystalline structure as well as plasticizer action; these two effects must therefore be carefully distinguished. Changes in the crystalline structure were followed by changes in the infrared spectrum. Dynamic mechanical and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurements were carried out on the polymer before and after treatment. Phenol treatment produces a total disappearance of the yield peak in the stress-strain curve and a simultaneous disappearance of neck formation. The drawing of amorphous PET was studied under dead-load creep conditions. Creep drawing of plasticized PVC was also measured. Measurements were made of the temperature dependence of orientation birefringence in PVC containing different amounts of plasticizers (dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl adipate, tricresyl phosphate). The different plasticizers produced very different effects in this type of experiment.
