OPTIMAL APPROXIMATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF THE ERROR AND STABILITY FUNCTIONS IN BANACH SPACES.

Abstract

Besides the best approximation projector, the author introduces the stabilization onto a subspace P which maximizes the cosine of the angle between u and an element v of P. The error and stability functions are characterized as eigenvalues of nonlinear operators involving those two projectors. (Author)
