DEVELOPMENT OF VACUUM ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION SOURCE.
Abstract
A plasma arc radiation source of unusual geometry has been developed and tested. The source provides useful radiant emission in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) range of the spectrum, 350 to 1000 A. The plasma arc operates nominally at pressures ranging from 300 to 1000 torr, arc currents from 100 to 300 A and power levels up to 10 kW. Rare gases are used as the discharge media. The source emits a combination of continuum and line radiation. The continuum radiation is due to radiative recombination of ions and electrons to the ground state of the neutral atom. The various continua thus produced cover the entire range from 350 to 1000 A. The plasma radiation source has applications in the VUV as a background source for the photoelectric measurement of absorption cross sections, as a solar simulator, in radiation damage studies for materials and coatings and in studies of plasma radiation processes.
