HEAVY SECTION STEEL TOUGHNESS CHARACTERIZATION.

Abstract

The report discusses a program to investigate the fracture toughness of thick section steels as influenced by mechanical constraint and through-thickness metallurgical variations; the primary tool used in these research studies is the dynamic tear (DT) test. The investigations discussed deal with the fracture toughness of A533 grade B plate; full thickness as well as size effect studies are described for two 12-in. class 1 plates from the HSST program and a 6-3/8-in. class 2 plate.
