HEAVY SECTION STEEL TOUGHNESS CHARACTERIZATION.

Abstract

The report discusses a program to investigate the fracture toughness of heavy section steels as influenced by mechanical constraint and through-thickness metallurgical variations. Included are size-effect studies using 5/8, 1, and 3-in. thick DT specimens. The report describes size-effect studies ranging from 5/8-in. to full thickness specimens for a 6-in. plate of A533 grade B, class 2 and a 12-in. plate of A533 grade B, class 1 steel. Also included are 5/8-in. DT characterizations of a 12-in. thick A533 submerged arc weld. (Author)
