STRESS AND DEFLECTION EQUATIONS FOR ANALYZING SHELLS WITH AXIALLY SYMMETRIC GEOMETRY AND LOADING-THEORY AND COMPUTER PROGRAM.

Abstract

This report gives the equations for solving the moments, shears, stresses and deflections for axially symmetric shells with axially symmetric loadings at each major discontinuity. These equations have all been included in a Fortran IV program for the IBM 360-65 digital computer, which has simplified the calculation of the shell stresses for projectiles, rockets, and missiles. A good deal of engineering experience is necessary to section the shell properly, to obtain equivalent sections, and to apply the loading as realistically as possible. The results are accurate only for small deflections and in the elastic region of the material. Applied to any case for which these assumptions are not valid, the formulas will yield results which at best are approximate. (Author)
