FREE-FIELD PARTICLE MOTION FROM A NUCLEAR EXPLOSION IN SALT. PART II.

Abstract

On Salmon, a 5-kt tamped underground nuclear explosion in salt, Project 12.11 measured acceleration, velocity, displacement, and strain with vertical component gages at several depths above the shot, with multicomponent gages at shot level, and with gages on the surface. A large amount of sporadic electrical noise was noted on the record traces. The records were edited to remove the noise and corrected for base line shifts. Displacement was obtained by integration of acceleration and velocity records. Scaled Salmon subsurface peak velocity and displacement agreed adequately with those for Gnome, a 3-kt tamped nuclear shot in salt. (Author)
