INFLUENCE OF CODING ON THE NOISE REJECTION THRESHOLD OF A SHORT SHIFT REGISTER CORRELATOR.

Abstract

A shift register digital correlator is examined to determine the effects of the sampling frequency, signal bandwidth and center frequency, and the correlator reference code on the distribution, mean, and variance of the correlator output when the input is random noise. This information is desirable in detection systems in order to set a threshold for deciding whether a signal is or is not present. Equipment to permit independent variation of the parameters and collection of the correlator output data is described. A mathematical presentation is given showing that variance is a function of the selected code when dependent samples are present and independent of the code with independent samples, while the mean is always independent of the selected code. A computer simulation of independent and dependent samples was performed. Experimental results were verified. (Author)
